Titel: First Chinese Concert in the Netherlands
Last saturday was the first Chinese Concert in the Netherlands. Place: Theater aan het Spui in The Hague. Lulu Wang, the famous Dutch-Chinese writer, presented an evening with Dance and Songs. In the background a huge movie screen with images of evaporating fast running clouds, Chinese landscapes and modern Chinese cities.
Main singer was Xiao Wang, a doctoral student at the University of Groningen, who participated in the RTL program Holland’s Got Talent, in which Wang was somewhat disdainfully treated by jurymember Gordon last year. Some time after that program Xiao Wang was invited by King Willem-Alexander to sit down at the state banquet in honor of the visit of the Chinese president Xi Jinping to the Netherlands.
Chinese Romeo and Juliet
Xiao Wang sang as a Caruso. Besides Chinese songs he sang Andrea Bocelli’s Songs Sogno and Che gelida manina. With opera-like vocals he equaled the Italian star. In between there was dancing, other singers and an ancient Chinese lute concert. Lulu Wang as host presenter connected all the contributions with each other and also told about the Chinese way of looking at things.
We learned that also China has a Romeo and Juliet, but that, unlike the European Romeo and Juliet, they weren’t doomed to die. ‘They turned into butterflies and always fluttered together around two trees with their roots intertwined.’
Talent just around the corner
Mr. Wang Shuai of the Hague Culture Club Viming had sponsored the concert. He was shortly interviewed by Lulu Wang. ‘Their is no profit on the short-run, but this gives benefits in the long run. It creates more unity among the Chinese here and between the Chinese and the Dutch’ he said.
Mark Koning, Secretary-General of VNC, the China-Netherlands Federation, also appeared on the stage. He spoke fluently Chinese. He explained: ‘We arranged already lots of cultural exchanges, but never a Concert like this. The talent here comes from around the corner.’

Afgelopen zaterdag vond het Eerste Chinees Concert in Nederland plaats. Plaats: het Theater aan het Spui in Den Haag. Onder leiding van presentatrice Lulu Wang kregen we een avond van dans en zang met op de achtergrond een enorm filmscherm met voortijlende wolken, Chinese landschappen en moderne Chinese steden.
Belangrijkste zanger was Xiao Wang, promovendus aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, die vorig jaar meedeed aan het RTL-programma Holland’s Got Talent en die enigszins laatdunkend bejegend werd door jurylid Gordon. Enige tijd na dat bewuste programma werd Xiao Wang door koning Willem-Alexander uitgenodigd aan te schuiven bij het staatsbanket ter ere van het bezoek van de Chinese president Xi Jinping aan Nederland.
Chinese Romeo en Julia
Xiao Wang zong de sterren van de hemel. Naast Chinese liederen zong hij Andrea Bocelli’s operaliederen Sognoen Che gelida manina. Met zijn uithalen evenaarde hij de Italiaanse ster. Tussendoor kregen we dans, andere zangers en zangeressen en een uitvoering van een Chinese luitconcert.
Lulu Wang praatte het geheel aan elkaar, waarbij ze de bijdragen linkte aan de Chinese manier van kijken en doen. Daarvan kwamen we te weten ook China een Romeo en Julia heeft, maar dat deze in tegenstelling tot de Europese Romeo en Julia nooit doodgingen. ‘Ze veranderden in vlinders, die altijd samen fladderden in de buurt van twee bomen die hun wortels in elkaar verstrengeld hebben.’
Talent zit om de hoek
Mr. Wang Shuai van de Culture Club Viming had het concert gesponsord. Hij kwam ook even op het podium. ‘Het levert niet direct profijt op, maar wel profijt op de lange termijn. Het creëert meer eenheid onder de Chinezen hier en van de Chinezen met de Nederlanders’ vertelde hij.
Ook Mark Koning, de secretaris-generaal van de Vereniging Nederland-China, die vloeiend Chinees sprak, verscheen even. ‘We hebben al veel culturele uitwisseling gehad, maar zo’n concert als vanavond vindt voor het eerst plaats. Het talent komt om de hoek vandaan.’
Lulu Wang wilde nog weten wat hem het meeste aantrok in de Chinese cultuur. ‘De Chinese filosofie van duizenden jaren geleden.’ En wat kan de Chinese gemeenschap doen om de relatie met de Nederlanders te verbeteren? ‘Doorgaan met dit soort leuke avonden.’
